The Interim Government's Chief Advisor, Muhammad Yunus, has stated that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will have to face trial for crimes against humanity, whether she is present in the country or not.

In an interview with British news outlet Sky News, he said, "Justice will definitely be served. Not only her, but everyone involved, including her family members, associates, and close individuals, will also come under the scope of justice."

In the interview, he also mentioned, "The judicial process will begin. It’s not just Sheikh Hasina; everyone related to her, including her family members and associates, will be brought to justice."

On August 5, after facing protests, Sheikh Hasina fled the country and is currently in India. She is accused of running secret detention centers and of torturing and killing political opponents under the guise of a ‘war on terrorism.’

Bangladesh’s tribunal has issued two arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina.

Dr. Yunus further mentioned that Bangladesh has sent an ‘official letter’ to India requesting her return, but has not yet received any formal response from New Delhi regarding this.

He reiterated that whether Sheikh Hasina stays in Bangladesh or remains in India, she will have to face trial.

Recently, Dr. Yunus visited one such infamous secret detention center, known as ‘Aynaghar’ (House of Mirrors), and described it as something "even m ore horrendous than you could imagine."

Dr. Yunus emphasized that it will take time to work out the full scope of the crimes involved and to identify all those associated with it.

“They were all involved in this operation. The entire government was involved. Therefore, you cannot separately identify who was acting in their own interest or who was following orders, or even who wasn’t supportive but was still involved,” he added.

There are also allegations of violent repression of protesters by Hasina, the military, and the police in July and August. According to United Nations estimates, up to 1,400 people were killed in the days before the former Prime Minister fled.

Dr. Yunus is determined to ensure swift justice for the families of the victims and intends to resolve this matter during his tenure.
