The Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has emphasized the importance of properly documenting all atrocities committed during the tenure of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Sunday, March 2, during a meeting with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis and Senior Human Rights Advisor Huma Khan from the UN's Resident Coordinator's Office, he made these remarks.

Dr. Yunus stated, "It is essential to properly document all atrocities committed against the people of this country. Without proper documentation, it will be difficult to know the correct information and ensure justice."

He pointed out the need to document the repression of protesters at Shapla Chattar, the police brutality against demonstrators after the verdict on Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, and extrajudicial killings that occurred over several years.

UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis expressed the UN's readiness to provide technical assistance for documenting such atrocities and to help build the capacity of the people of Bangladesh in this regard. She noted that this process would aid in preventing similar incidents and establishing the truth.

During the meeting, Dr. Yunus also mentioned that the UN had published an investigative report on human rights violations and torture during the 2024 July and August protests. He expressed his satisfaction with the UN's report, noting, "We are very pleased that the UN has published this report on human rights violations. It was not an easy task, but they managed to release it on time."

Gwyn Lewis informed the Chief Advisor that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk would brief member states on this report at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council on March 5.

The Resident Coordinator also expressed hope that during UN Secretary-General António Guterres' upcoming visit to Bangladesh, the Rohingya crisis would once again gain global attention, especially as financial support for the issue is dwindling.
