Tangail:
Before planting saplings in agricultural fields, farmers traditionally used oxen and buffaloes to plow the land. However, with the advancement of modern agricultural machinery, this practice is slowly disappearing. In the absence of other occupations, Shafiqul Islam from Kochua village in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail has taken up this traditional profession.
In the villages of Gorgovindpur, Kalia, Kochua, Daripaka, Hamidpur, and Muchariya Pathar, there is still significant demand for plowing the fields with oxen and buffaloes. Over time, however, this method is disappearing from the region.
Local farmers say that without proper plowing before planting rice seedlings in the fields, water does not reach the roots efficiently, and weeds grow quickly, which results in poor yields. Despite the availability of modern agricultural machinery, plowing with oxen or buffaloes is still required.
In response to the local demand, Shafiqul Islam, a local unemployed youth, has chosen plowing as his profession. He is the son of Abdul Karim Mia from Kochua village.
Shafiqul Islam told Bangladesh Protidin, "Since I had no other occupation, I decided to plow others' fields with my buffalo. I can plow about three to four bighas (56 decimals) of land a day. After feeding the buffalo and covering other expenses, I make a profit of about one to one and a half thousand taka daily."
Farmer Azgar Ali commented, "Unlike before, we no longer use plows, yokes, or ox
